Why Transferring Points Matters

One of the most powerful moves in the rewards world is transferring flexible points — from credit card programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, or similar — to airline or hotel loyalty programs. This often unlocks redemptions at rates far better than redeeming points directly through a card's travel portal.

But the process has important rules. Transfer the wrong points to the wrong program at the wrong time, and you may lock in poor value with no way back.

Step 1: Understand Your Points Currency

Before transferring anything, identify what type of points you have:

  • Flexible/transferable points: These are bank-issued currencies (e.g., Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Points). They can transfer to multiple partner programs.
  • Co-branded/program points: These are tied to a specific airline or hotel (e.g., Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors points). These generally cannot be transferred to other programs — only redeemed within the program or its partners.

Step 2: Identify Transfer Partners

Each flexible points program has its own list of transfer partners. Log into your credit card rewards portal and look for a "Transfer Points" or "Airline & Hotel Partners" section. You'll see a list of programs you can transfer to, along with the transfer ratio.

Most transfers happen at a 1:1 ratio (1,000 card points = 1,000 airline miles), but some partners transfer at different rates — always verify before initiating a transfer.

Step 3: Check the Transfer Time

Transfer speeds vary:

  • Instant transfers: Some partners (often major airlines) process transfers in minutes.
  • Delayed transfers: Others can take 24–72 hours, or occasionally longer.

Critical rule: Never transfer points speculatively. Only transfer once you've identified a specific award flight or hotel stay you intend to book — and ideally, confirm the availability first. Award space can disappear between your transfer and your booking attempt.

Step 4: Confirm Award Availability First

  1. Search for your desired flight or hotel stay on the loyalty program's website or app.
  2. Confirm the award is available and note the exact points cost.
  3. Make sure the cost matches what you'll have after the transfer.
  4. Then initiate the transfer from your credit card portal.
  5. Once points arrive, immediately book the award.

Step 5: Execute the Transfer

In your credit card rewards portal:

  • Select the airline or hotel partner from the list.
  • Enter your loyalty program membership number — this must match exactly; errors can result in points being transferred to a wrong account.
  • Enter the number of points to transfer (most programs require transfers in increments of 1,000).
  • Confirm and submit. Save any confirmation number provided.

What to Watch Out For

  • Transfers are one-way and irreversible. Once sent, you cannot transfer points back.
  • Name matching: The name on your credit card account must typically match the name on your loyalty account.
  • Transfer bonuses: Card issuers occasionally run limited-time transfer bonuses (e.g., 30% bonus miles to a specific airline). These can be excellent opportunities — watch for them.
  • Minimum transfer amounts: Most programs require a minimum transfer of 1,000 points.

Summary

Transferring points is a high-value skill for any rewards enthusiast. Done correctly and intentionally, it can multiply the value of your points many times over. The golden rule: identify your award, confirm availability, then transfer — never the other way around.
